“They were all drug addicts, perverts and sometimes worse.”
This reminded me of something Stephen Fry said a while ago, shortly after his regression from being a professional gay rights whiner back to being the witty, acerbic, demonically intelligent national treasure we all loved, when everyone knew he was gay and nobody (well only a tiny number of bigots,) cared.
He was talking about political correctness in Hollywood and said “What’s happened in Hollywood is tragic, in the 1960s and 70s they were all drunks, drug addicts, sex addicts, serial goat molesters or something, and they made great pictures, now they’re all clean living, clean thinking, right — on activists and what they produce is terrible.”
To me ‘woke’ (apart from being ungrammatical,) means being the opposite of awakened, alert, aware. The ranks of the ‘woke’ are best represented by those grey, expressionless characters of the NCP meme, prone to Pavlovian knee jerk reactions and parroting politically correct propaganda.
You’re right about comedy though, it shouldn’t have a social conscience but should lampoon everything. As the incomparable Mel Brooks once said, “You can’t have humor without bad taste.”
