There’s an ongoing debate in Christian theological circles about whether the word originally used in the source texts to describe Jesus’ dear old Mum actually means ‘virgin’ or simply ‘young woman.’ Understandably few Christians will ever admit there might be an alternative meaning to ‘virgin,’ because the moment they do a lot of their belief system collapses. Virgin vs young woman isn’t as much fun as virgin vs raisins or course.
As you say, rape in wartime is a common practice and the reasons are complex, but my linked page, which took as its main source a report by Amnesty, explores the topic more fully. Amnesty’s findings do actually make a lot of sense though understanding the reasoning of the men involved is beyond me. We are perhaps too far removed in Europe from the mindset of those involved in tribal and sectarian conflicts to grasp the idea that once penetrated a woman retains something of that man for life. I remember a Hindu friend trying to explain the caste system to me once, regarding how by letting me buy her lunch she had technically lost her Brahmin caste and if we had been seen by anyone who knew her, it could have caused traditionalists (her Dad) to ostracise her. We just don’t get that kind of thing.
I haven’t even seen Nanny Ogg offer any wise advice on the subject.
