And it's unlikely our ancestors would have climbed to the top of the food chain without an articulated spine to help us move, curl up and conserve heat and benefit from the many advantages we have over creatures with a rigid skeleton.

Evolution is not a mechanistic process and my take on this article is that it is not suggesting the kind of deity that says, "Let There Be Evolution," but something that provides the possibility of evolution along with the possibility of planets, water, oxygen etc.
