The problem is repeated everywhere Sonya, in Britain I and other writers who live in the north are expected to fit a stereotype of a poorly educated industrial worker who drinks a lot of beer, has a very bad diet and writes long winded diatribes against the injustices of capitalism. In fact I grew up in a large house, was educated in an elite school and was an IT professional. My Dad was a jounalist, a somewhat disreputable profession but a lucrative one, and Grandad was a bookie, another disreputable profession, but from both I learned some valuable lessons.
The problem is the UK publishing industry is centred in London and Londoners see all outside London as backward and parochial. I have the impression that in the US things are a bit more distributed, simply because it’s a much bigger population and a bigger geographical area. But I think we saw evidence of a great deal of prejudice in the 2016 election campaign, in which Trump supporters were depicted as stupid, uneducated xenophones from the agricultural states while Hillary supporters saw themselves as enlightened and progressive and were concentrated in the main population centres.
It was ridiculous of course to stereotype people in agricultual states that way, the populations are diverse intellectually if not ethnically, but try telling publishers that. It now only takes hours to get from one side of the USA to another, yet publishers and intellectuals still see.m to fixate on the idea that the plains states are as inaccessible and remote as when wagon trains rolled west
France suffers in the same ways, if you are not from Paris, Lyon, Marsellies or at least attended the universities there, you are regarded as an unsophisticated country bumpkin.
It comes down to snobbery, the prejudice which those who rant against prejudice allow themselves. It isn’t new, in the 1960s a very controversial British writer, a working class Londoner names Johnny Speight wrote a play that caused a major stir and prompted the establishment to marhinalise the author. It’s title was: “If There Weren’t Any Blacks You’d Have To Invent Them.” It’s a trait the metropolitan elites are not immune to.
