“ The first was a Bill Maher segment in which he barely even attempted to tell any jokes, spending the time instead explaining to his viewers why the Republican Party is “the party of Putin.”

British comedy is going this way too. A comedian will walk on stage and do ten minutes left wing propaganda followed by a long section on how people who voted for Brexit are ignorant, low — education, low — information, small minded, intolerant, racist, sexist, homophobic, islamophobic, working class bigots, (Oh how the working class people in the audience roar with laughter at that stuff,) followed by a round up of all the things ‘woke’ hipsters and any other intelligent people agree on, Islam is wonderful, immigration is great, multiculturalism is a runaway success and all the rumours of unrest in cities with large migrant populations are “extreme right conspiracy theories,” the only way to lift us out of economic stagnation caused by the massive public spending programs of past governments is a massive public spending program etc. etc.

But ambitious comedians have to do this if they want to get work on TV.

And it isn’t just comedians who are being constrained by the Politically Correct Thought Police. A few weeks ago author Lionel Shriver was fired by her publisher (yes, HER publisher — the name is confusing,) for criticizing a the announcement of a policy of giving preference to new authors from ethnic, religious or sexual minority backgrounds or those who have some form of disability. She had previously been in trouble for mocking the innovation of hiring ‘sensitivity editors’ to ensure nothing bearing the publisher’s imprint would expose readers to the risk of reading anything they might find offensive.

Ms Shriver, it seems, is an old fashioned kind of girl, and thinks talent should be the only criterium for evaluating a writer’s work and that fiction should be believable rather than politically correct.
