If we are planning to write philosophical essays on personal development we have to accept the internet is a bigger distraction as television and just as much a negative influence. And as has been amply demonstrated over the past 100 years, the big government ideals of socialism are a non starter as are all global solutions, (including singing Kumbaya.)

Seeking solitude, going off grid for a while in order to de — stress and get our heads sorted is great for us as individuals, but it doesn’t solve bigger, group problems.

As for putting aside the ego, sub Buddhist Californian hippy dippy stuff would be fine if the world could support 7 billion Tibetan monks, but as it can’t because someone has to grow food and someone has to build houses and human nature being what it is, those who do practical things tend to want practical rewards. Inner peace is not really going to compensate adequately for ten hours hard work.

Back to the drawing board on this one. In my view we have to decentralise power and develop localism and through that restore a sense of community. When government is to remote it becomes difficult to govern in the broad interests of the majority of people and the bigger a land area or population a nation has, the more remote government must become.

Opted for comfortable retirement before I was fifty due to health problems and burn out. Now spend my time writing and goofing around. Home: northern England..
