If we’re doing fish metaphors, then as the great French philosopher Cantona once said, “When the seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think little fishes will be thrown into the sea.
Well Ok, it’s not exactly Plato standard, but Eric scored many stunning goals for Manchester United as well as giving us a few quotable thoughts, and to be fair he was onto something. The elites have made so many people dependent on the system any change is not going to happen quickly. Keep throwing out the benefits, the masses’ll keep following the trawler.
As you say ideologies are not going to change things. Conservatism serves the well off and is attractive to those who fear change. Socialism failed too many times, liberalism was hijacked by doogooderfuckers and now is only a refuge for the emotionally crippled and anarchism (my personal favourite,) is just not practical.
Chaos might just work however. When all ideologies have failed and governments of every stripe have proved incompetent, if society starts to fall apart people may just realise the only way to make life bearable is to learn to live alongside each other. We don’t all have to be best friends, but we must be quick to make allowances, slow to take offence.
But who will lead, who will break with the crowd and say “We don’t have to do what the elite want us to.” What kind of people are able to go their own way instead of folloeing the trawler? To return to Eric Cantona’s one liners, “Only dead fishes swim with the stream.”
