I remember some years ago you writing regular columns in UK newspaper The Guardian Jeff and you were just as far removed from the reality of the internet then as your article above shows you are now.
Facebook was from day one a machine to facilitate mass surveillance of the populace, it was never about content creation. It’s had for someone who understands the technology and understands how all the ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ on those pointless memes benefit some of the most ruthless and fascistic corporations in the world.
You claim the ‘Facebook generation’ are wonderful and well informed content creators, citing the responses of pupils from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on the recent mass shooting tragedy. Are you so out of touch that you have not observed they are simply parroting the noise in the propaganda echo chamber, (and BTW, the propaganda for the gun control lobby only gives credibility to those ‘false flag’ conspiracy theories that do the rounds after such events.
Having said that, there was never very much credible content posed on Facebook (unless you consider piano playing cat memes to be the height of creativity.
The great failure of the internet is that The Powers That Be have allowed corporations and corporate money to hijack it. And worst among the pirates who took it over and used it to harvest and sell private data were those initially backed by government money, Google and Facebook.
Google are currently in trouble in Europe and facing close scrutiny elsewhere for their violations of data protection law, and may well find the empire being broken up as Bell was in the Jurassic era of telecoms. Facebook seem to have reached the tipping point, having pissed off their users so much there is no way back. Well who can ever forget that quip from Mark Zuckerberg when he expressed his respect for the people who made him rich: “The dumb fucks trust us.”
And people, worse still governments, did trust them even when they were caught blatantly ignoring consumer rights, breaking laws and ignoring judicial rulings. If the game really is up for Zuck & Co. we should celebrate.
