I haven’t seen the film (after reading your article maybe I’ll remedy that,) but I remember Sonmi from reading the book when it came out in paperback. Her envy of the new blonde, big eyed fabricant, the Kylim (?) obviously based on singer Kylie Minogue, was quite endearingly human. And while I would not quite agree with the fabricant hottie now, our society is moving in directions that suggest in a few decades our (well my descendents probably) lives will not be our own.
Other than that (and without spoilers because I don’t know how much the film differs from the book,) I was intrigued by the way the story swung like time’s pendulum to end almost where it had started, but with a definite allusion to The Book Of Enoch (the most important Old Testament book to not make the final cut, and this missing from The Old Testament, with the surviving members of a dying civilisation monitoring from their high tech enclaves, the progress of primitive nomadic tribes.
Certainly a great book (his follow up, Ghost Written, was very good too,) and as I say the film is now on my ‘to watch’ list.
