Google might be well advised forget the group hugs and hippy shite and start treating employes like grown ups. The office is an office not a kindergarden and people are different, not everyone appreciates the touchy feely stuff. They’d also do well to work on building a decent search engine before they start writing algos to manage essentially human functions.
It’s well known that techies seldom make good manager, they tend to be too insular. Some good advice here however, especially on being a good communicator and staying calm. People are not happy being led by a panicker or someone who gets deeply involved in technical detail and fails to understand the big picture.
Apart from that the only thing I’d add is take the team for a drink or lunch from time to time, if you’re a half decent manager you will find a way to charge it to expenses.
