Excellent comment Jaynee, you covered all the big areas f this crisis that are being used by opportunistic politicians and corporate bosses, sensationalist media organisations and research grant phishing scientists to further their own interests.
I just finished an article today, (I probably will not post it until tomorrow,) on how the way the UK National Statistics Office gathers and collates data on deaths has been changed with the obvious intention of inflating the kill rate of COVID — 19. I intended it to be about 1000 to 1250 words but it ended up close to 5000, such is the depth of statistical fraud and misrepresentation involved.
It is easy to blame Donal Trump or Boris Johnson when the projections turn out to be wrongbut to my mind it is not the politicians, but the mathematical modellers who produce the projected figures who need to be called to account. When asked for a projection of, say, number of deaths in an epidemic, there is nothing wrong with saying, “Sorry, we simply don’t have enough information to produce a reliable estimate. Instead, all too often, convinced of their own omnipotence perhaps, they produce some wild, headline grabbing prediction which leads to bad decisions being made and catastrophically wrong policies being implemented.
