Excellent article, Hume is a sadly neglected philosopher who offered a radically different way of looking at the world, at a time when it often seems we are divided into two tribes, living on either side of an abyss and impotently throwing dogma at each other.
Medium can often seem to be a liberal echo chamber, other sites I visit are equally dominated by right wing perspectives. I’ve never minded being the one who stands out from the crowd, but I like to feel I’m in diverse company (and when I mention diversity I do not mean differences in skin colour.)
As Hume said, although I can’t remember his exact wording, there are no universal answers to the great questions of life and we must all act according to our own perceptions. Too many people, on both sides of that abyss, now give the impression there is only one answer to every question, and are quick to denounce different ideas as racist, sexist, homophobic, fascist or politically incorrect.
