Comedian Konstantin Kisin turned down a lucrative university student union gig after being asked to sign a “behavioural agreement” restricting what he could do jokes about. The entertainer was warned about a “zero tolerance policy” on topics including racism, sexism and transphobia.

He had been invited to perform at the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) in London,in an event organised by university society Unicef on Campus. Konstantin told BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat the experience reflects a growing trend in UK universities of free speech becoming stifled by politically correct attitudes prevelant in student union organisations across the UK.

The group has since apologised for the offensive wording of the form and the Students’ Union says it “believes fully in freedom of speech”. Unfortunately these neo — puritans have not acknowledged their hypocrisy, donned sackcloth and ashes and promised to try in future not to be such bigoted, self righteous arseholes.

Kisin shared the “behavioural agreement form” online, saying the title “nearly made me puke. I just think it reflects an attitude among a group of people, people at university particularly, where it seems that they have become places of indoctrination rather than learning,” he said.

“Students are being taught to make a priority of not giving offence rather than to seeking truth and pursuing experiences.

“Universities used to be all about that, but now it seems they’re places where students are being taught to be ‘woke’. I think it reflects a broader issue, where increasingly there are people who value safety, or what they perceive to be safety.”

All we can say is if students are being taught to be ‘woke’ rather than awakened, the lecturers must be sadly lacking in literacy skills. What is truly appalling however, is that emotional immaturity is being embedded by higher education. What constitutes ffensive comment is a very subjective matter, there is no universally agreed definition. A mature person will not look for offence in verbal or textual information, but will condider it and either accept it as valid even if we do not agree, choose to ignore it or object politely. A mature person does not seek to ban certain words or shades of opinion, ‘because diversity.’

The lefties who manage, staff and dominate student politics in our universities like to preach of diversity and multuculturalism, yet time and again we read and hear reports of how they are trying to suppress diversity of opinion and create a politically correct monoculture in the higher education system

The full list of topics listed by the organisers were “racism, sexism, classism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia or anti-religion or anti-atheism”.

The contract said: “It does not mean that these topics cannot be discussed. But it must be done in a respectful and non-abusive way.”’ But again we it the problem of who defines what is respectful and what constitutes abusive.
