Caitlin, I posted an article a few years ago titled “How Putin Could Win World War Three without firing a shot, and while the liberals in mainstream media are screaming about Trump, Harvey Weinstein & Co, and “white privilege” it is happening. Russia, China and Iran are leading moves to replace the petrodollar as the global reserve currency.
Without the petrodollar the US economy is insolvent, at best a great power in decline, but if the social policies liberals want are followed, a failed state.
But I’ve noticed how, throughout the Obama era and on to Hillary’s failed coronation, “liberals” gradually learned to love many of the things they had always claimed to hate, authoritarianism, conformity, militarism and American exceptionalism among them.
I spent some time in the US a long time ago in the 1960s, around the area where the states of New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts come together, very affluent, very white, very North - east Liberal. I have never know people so obsessed with cultivating the good opinion of others in their community or so suspicious of anything that smelled even slightly of non conformity.
These were the people Pete Seeger sang about in Little Boxes, oh so politically correct (though the phrase was not in general use then,) but absolutely besotted with material wealth and career success.
I think for the Dems to have any chance of regaining power they need to find another rogue candidate like Bernie but younger. But who can capture the public imagination and harness that energy generated by anger with the political and corporate cabal?
Failing that they need a Ross Perot type to split Trump’s vote. But talking about “white privilege is not going to win many votes among the white working classes who struggle to make ends meet.
