Actually Eve, my very good friends Kalpana and I had a discussion about it, it’s her translation from modern Hindi (her native language,) which in turn has been translated from ancient Sanskrit through several intermediate dialects.
One could make the same criticism of most Bible quotes ans those texts have been translated from Aramaic to Greek, to Latin and then to English. In fact many phrases translated directly from Latin to English do not make much sense when translated literally.
The translator’s craft lies in being able to capture the sense of what is being said and express it in a different language. Kalpana is not a professional translator however, she’s a professor of medicine but her translation works for me.
